The World's Wackiest French Joke Book features 500 groan-worthy puns and clever turns of phrase, along with 18 screwball line drawings and fascinating culture notes.
This is a great little book. It combines a bit of French language medicine with the sugar of bad humor to come up with something that goes down smoothly with the 7-12-graders (high school ages). Our 13-year-old has already grown a hat size with the increased vocabulary. Not exactly for intellectuals but recommended for the rest of us.
One might think that the silliness promised by this book's description would distract-- or even work against-- effective learning of new French words. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that just the opposite is true. The book's puns facilitate visual learning through its many punny images. Can you ever forget that the French word for cow is "(une) vache" after you've seen a cow dressed in her ra-vache-ing evening attire? Many of the puns are accompanied by "fun facts" relating to French culture and history that add considerably to this book's educational value. You'd be hard pressed to find another book that makes learning so much fun at such a reasonable price. Buy it!
