Nevermind's sound is familiar now, it's only because thousands of rock records that followed it were trying very hard to cop its style. It tears out of the speakers like a cannonball, from the punk-turbo-charged riff of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" onward, magnifying and distilling the wounded rage of 15 years of the rock underground into a single impassioned roar. Few albums have occupied the cultural consciousness like this one; of its 12 songs, roughly 10 are now standards. The record's historical weight can make it hard to hear now with fresh ears, but the monumental urgency of Kurt Cobain's screams is still shocking.

classic!I don't usually like rock but this one is truly special! one of the best rock albums of all time, there are a few reviews by other users who are prob. too young to understand how legendary this group is/was! I don't agree with someone giving a 1 star for this album or group period but it's your opinion.

Definitive GrungeOne of the defining moments of the "Grunge Era", this disk exhibits the command of dynamics that Cobain mastered. Songs go from racious to quiet, there are the obvious list of hits, "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "In Bloom", "Lithium", "Come As You Are", etc., plus a bunch of ravers. I really believe this is where Dave Grohl learned how to orchestrate and his command of dynamics that filters through to the current Foo Fighters releases. A necessary addition to any collection.

Why isn't there any rapping or lyrics that talk about rims and girls rubbing their booty on you in the club? After listening to my 50 Cent cd... I was looking for some rock to add to my collection. And since i LOVE grunge bands like Nickelback, Creed, and GodSmack.. I thought I'd check out this 'so called' grunge band NIRVANA. I couldn't believe my ears! The singer sounds like hes trying to sound like Puddle of Mud and Nickelback. And the lyrics are so terrible! Why aren't there any DJS? or lyrics about drinking vodka in the club with half naked women?
Avoid poser bands like Nirvana, Alice in Chains, and Pearl Jam...and stick with REAL GRUNGE like Creed and GodSmack.. and if you want lyrics and emotion listen to 50 Cent or Lil Wayne.

One of a few albums...This is one of a few albums that you can see a significant difference in popular music before and after its release - albums like Sgt. Pepper's. This album changed music for the better - away from the manufactured hair band drivel from the late 80's and into the 'alternative' rock movement of the 1990s. We've yet to see another album like this one: someday we will, but every major rock record released since 1992 has some bit of influence by Nirvana - a change in production style towards artist controlled production and away from manufactured rock like Warrant or Poison.

Good, but In Utero is much betterI think we've heard all the positive things you can say about this album, so how about some negative? First of all, I find it interesting that the magazine that gave this album 3 stars and basically overlooked it (Rolling Stone) now has the biggest boner of any magazine. Give it a rest! "Smells Like Teen Spirit" does not have the best solo ever, in fact, it's one of the worst Nirvana solos ever, just repeating the chorus again. Not to mention that this album is so overproduced Kurt Cobain couldn't even listen to it. There are some awesome songs on here and it was my introduction to grunge (well, this and Ednaswap) but there was much better grunge and a lot of it was done by Nirvana.
