Dance pop-merengue star Elvis Crespo shot to the top of the charts in Billboard with his feverish and horn-fueled mix of nonstop merengue, as best exemplified by the anthem "Suavemente." Even if you don't know Spanish, the tribalistic grooves connect solidly enough that suddenly even merengue dance steps seem instinctive. The tune has been such a smash that label reps released a "Spanglish" version that was included in the movie musical Dance with Me. Also instantly hypnotic is "Tu Sonrisa," another blitzkrieg-paced merengazo propelled by bewitching horns and relentless percussion. These two tunes alone are worth the cost of the CD. Elsewhere, there are more merengues and the occasional romantic bachata--especially noteworthy are "Llorando" and the flamenco guitar-fueled "Te Vas." Another bachata, "Nuestra Cancion," is classic bachata, reminiscent of the great singer-songwriter Juan Luis Guerra. --Ramiro Burr

To Each His/Her Own...!...?
Everybody is going to have their own opinion...me...i like Elvis Crespo. Energetic, Fun and a song that will never die! Say what you want about E.C. he has created a song that will forever be a favorite on the dancefloor...i simply refuse to play songs twice but i can't say no to my customers and clients...they more than often Have to hear "Sauvemente" more than once...at the clubs i DJ at i always try to save it for after 12:30 ...1am...to close out my last latino set. Yes there are a few good songs here...Tu Sonrisa....Princesita to name a few. Bottom line is...E.C. has a song that will always be a HEATER and wheather you like him or not that won't change. I do agree that on the authentic side he isn't...but fun and good for my dance floor he is always gonna be!!! Thanks for Savemente!!!...p.s. remember...2 each his/her own! music is all about the love!!!

Fabuloso
Wow! What a talented singer. If you're not familiar with Latin music, Elvis Crespo is a great introduction.

All songs sound the same, but they still make you move
Although all of the songs have different titles they all sound pretty much the same. However they are still catchy enough to make you move.

Not for connoisseurs of this genre
Basically this merengue is not authentic and definitely not representative of the genre. This kind of merengue will sell because there will always be people who like the top 10 hits in any category of music and of course people who don't know enough about merengue to really judge this music the way it should be. This album lacks in every way and all songs sound the same. Suavemente is the big hit, it gets a crowd going for sure, it's a nightclub favorite but after that I can't say too much. The rest of songs sound like Suavemente so I can't call this an album...may be Suavamente variations. I am not into bashing albums but honestly merengue like this is not representative of the real Macoy. If you bought the album because you like the song, please do continue to enjoy it. However, if you are serious about merengue please sample the classic Dominican groups that still reign in this genre. You may want to try music from Los Toros Band, Rubby Perez, Juan Luis Guerra, Fernando Villalona and Los Hermanos Rosario just to name a few. But really this album is a misrepresentation of this beautiful Dominican rhythm.

Catchy pop/merengue
All of the songs are catchy...only problem is they all sound the same. "Suavemente", "Tu Sonrisa", "Luna Llena" and previous work with Grupo Mania all have the same beat and horns. The CD is upbeat and fun to listen to, but come on Elvis, come up with some new material.
